Alfa Romeo is edging closer-and-closer to reclaiming their title as the home of performance cars after the uncovering of news relating to their upcoming supercar-slayer – the Alfa Romeo Giulia Coupe.

The big deal around the coupe is the Formula One style energy recovery system, or ‘ERS’. This mild-hybrid technology, when paired to the right engine, is capable of creating some magical numbers.
The Giulia Coupe is having two powertrains exclusively developed using the ERS technology. The first based on the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine found in the Giulia Veloce and the second based on the 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 found in the Giulia Quadrifoglio.
The engines, combined with the ERS technology bump the power outputs up to 257kW in the 2.0-litre and 478kW in the 2.9-litre V6, making the V6 the most powerful road-going engine to ever be found in an Alfa, being just 15kW shy of the Ferrari 488.
The new model is expected to debut towards the end of 2018 before going on sale in 2019. Naming is still unconfirmed, but insiders are hinting towards a ‘Sprint’ badge, while enthusiasts believe that the coupe will wear the GTV badge. As with the Giulia sedan, the coupe will also likely be available with more ‘everyday’ engines, such as the 147kW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and the 110kW diesel engine.
The Alfa Giulia Coupe may also share most of its DNA with the Ferrari LaFerrari considering that the ERS system for the Giulia is expected to be a reworked set-up of the one found in the hypercar. Performance takes first priority over efficiency and emissions.
This performance comes with a price, though, as Alfa Romeo will have to dedicate resources to finding a way to package all of this technology into a two-door coupe. The motor, control systems, inverter and battery pack will all need to be accommodated and there might also be a liquid cooling system to optimise battery performance and durability, as with the LaFerrari.
