Aston Martin have their sights set on the Ferrari 812 Superfast with their upcoming supercar edging closer to production. The iconic DBS badge will make its return within the next few months when it succeeds the Vanquish in Aston’s line-up. Accompanying the DBS badge is the ‘Superleggera’ title, paying homage to Touring Superleggera, the Italian coachbuilder responsible for designing the DB4, DB5 and DB6Mk1.
The DBS prototype has been spied running track and cold-climate tests sporting a stealthy black paint-job. A few spyshots that were taken at the Nurburgring show the DBS sharing a similar DB11 silhouette. The keen eye will notice larger headlights, angrier bonnet vents and a wider front grille, reminiscent of the elusive Aston Martin One-77.
The rear of the prototype flaunts the quad pipe setup of the Vanquish S, distinguishing it from the twin pipes of the DB11. The taillights are a lot slimmer and there is also an active rear wing, hinting at some serious aerodynamic upgrades. In fact, most of the bodywork on the DBS Superleggera will focus on improving the aerodynamics, making it more of a supercar and less of a quick GT, a market that the DB11 already satisfies.
We can expect to find Astons new 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine under the bonnet. The DB11 produces 447kW from this unit, although this number is expected to rise significantly in the DBS Superleggera if it intends on rivalling cars like the 588kW Ferrari 812 Superfast. In fact, insiders from Aston revealed that the V12 engine was ‘proven to 611kW’ with some ‘very elegant solutions’, placing it a level above the Ferrari.
Aston Martin’s latest product strategy will see them releasing a new car every year until 2023. The DBS Superleggera will enter showrooms after the V8 Vantage and will be fully revealed within the next three months.
