The first-gen Audi R8 4.2 V8 is undoubtedly one of the most iconic Audi’s to be made, and it seems as if Audi will be looking to strike it lucky once more with the second-gen R8, expected to be powered by the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine found in the latest RS5 Coupe and RS4 Avant.

The engine, co-developed by Porsche, is also used in the Panamera where it develops 324kW of power and 550Nm of torque. Power is likely to be sent to all four wheels. Sources in Audi have also revealed that the V6 model will be available in more than one power output range, indicating different models such as R8 V6 and R8 V6 Plus models.

The R8 V6 has been spotted doing some testing alongside the R8 V10 plus, most likely for benchmarking. The design differences between the test car and the R8 V10 appear to be minimal, aside from a set of smaller exhaust baffles behind the rear grilles which will make the V6 model significantly quieter compared to its fire-breathing 10-cylinder sibling.

There is also a lot of camouflage on the car, especially around the bumpers, suggesting that there will be redesigned front and rear bumpers fitted onto the R8 V6 model. Expect to see slightly toned down, less aggressive styling.

According to insiders, the only reason why a V8 powered R8 doesn’t already exist is because of the high costs involved in developing it to meet emissions standards in certain markets.

The introduction of a V6 model, along with the rear-wheel drive Audi R8 RWS model, is setting the R8 model-line up to be one of the most competitive in the automotive industry, competing with cars like the F-Type V6 all the way up to the Lamborghini Huracan.
